About Us
To
really know who the company is, you need to start at its beginning.
In 1970, Gary Sims founded Sims Steel Buildings in a small Arkansas
town. At that time, he was the only employee of his general contracting/agricultural
building dealer business. He began to fabricate parts of the building
himself a few years later, while still purchasing the other components.
In
the summer of 1985, Sims and his son Barry decided to form a partnership
after Barry graduated from college. After looking at a few different
cities, they felt Memphis would give their new company the best opportunity
for success. The two relocated to a 12,000 sq. ft. facility in Memphis
and Metal Building Products opened its doors in 1986, with incorporation
coming the following year.
MBPI
continued where Sims Steel Buildings left off, by selling metal building
systems and offering general contracting services, mainly in the agricultural
sector. However, the company, with its six employees, was fabricating
more of its own building packages. Soon it was producing complete buildings
in-house. As the focus became more on manufacturing, sales staff was
added.
Barry
purchased the company from his father in 1995. By that point, the manufacturing
portion of the business had grown to where the company had to consider
forming a separate division focused solely on fabrication. That happened
in 1997 with the development of Wenco Building Systems as the manufacturing
arm of MBPI. This separation allowed the company to provide adequate
service and growth opportunities for both functions.
Further
separation occurred in 2000 when MBPI which is licensed in Arkansas,
Mississippi and Tennessee moved to a different location. According
to Sims, "The move gave more credibility to truly separate divisions.
It physically separated the day-to-day operations and ensured contractors
the manufacturing arm of the company was separate from the contracting
division." Today, MBPI continues to operate as a separate division,
but is located on the same grounds as SPIRCO.
It
was at this time that the manufacturing division became known as its
current name Spirco Manufacturing. This was primarily due to
another company in a similar field having a name close to Wenco. Spirco
was derived from "Spirit" and "Company".
